Most of your permit applications will eventually reach a stage where inspections must be booked and completed at the location listed in the permit. These inspections are primarily managed by inspectors, typically assigned by city staff, who book, complete, and update the inspections in your application file.

In most cases, you will only see the 'Inspections' tab on your application record once the application reaches the inspections stage. Depending on the visibility settings set by city staff, there should be a list of inspections that need to be completed before the application can be approved.

In this list, you’ll find a set of actions you can take on the right side:

As you can see, inspections that have not been booked or requested yet will have a 'Request' button next to them. What does this mean, exactly?

Requesting vs Scheduling an Inspection

As an applicant, it’s crucial to stay on top of your inspections during this stage. One of the most important aspects is understanding whether you can Request or Schedule your inspections.

☝️ Requesting an Inspection

In most cases, you can request an inspection at the location by clicking the 'Request' button next to each inspection. Requesting an inspection allows you to suggest a convenient time for the inspectors to visit and conduct the inspection. We recommend adding a note with helpful details, such as the most suitable times for the inspection.

Requesting an inspection is not the same as booking one. The inspector is responsible for booking the inspection, taking your request into consideration, and, if possible, scheduling it for the suggested date and time.

📆 Scheduling an Inspection

In some cases, city staff will give you permission to schedule the inspection yourself. This will be evidenced by the 'Schedule' button instead of the 'Request' button within the inspection line.

The process of scheduling an inspection is similar to requesting one. By pressing 'Schedule', a small window will open where you can select the inspection date and add any helpful notes, such as the best time for the visit.

🤔 How do I know if I can schedule an inspection?

If you're permitted to schedule an inspection, you will:

  • Receive an email from the GovWell system notifying you that you have an inspection task to complete.

  • See an inspection task listed in your 'Tasks' view.

  • Find a 'Schedule' button next to your inspections when you open your application record.
